Our mission is to deliver joy, comfort, and quality of life to children with cancer and their families through free integrative therapies and holistic support.
Lucy Grogan was 8 years old when she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Throughout Lucy's long illness, concerned individuals like you raised money to help support Lucy. Lucy learned about the benefits of integrative therapies such as massage, acupuncture, art therapy, and therapeutic horseback riding during her treatment. Lucy was distressed to learn that integrative therapies were not covered by insurance, and were therefore not accessible to her peers in the hospital.
Lucy told her mother that when she was "done with cancer," she wanted to start a program that would provide free integrative therapies to all children with cancer to help manage the side effects and late effects of traditional cancer treatment. She felt that cure was very important, but recognized that no one was addressing the immediate suffering that she and her friends already faced every day. Lucy's primary concern was to deliver comfort... until a cure.
So in 2006, 11-year-old Lucy Grogan and her mom, Beecher Grogan, co-founded Lucy's Love Bus. Lucy named the organization Lucy's Love Bus because she wanted to deliver love, comfort and quality of life to children with cancer. Lucy passed away only six months later, but her legacy of care and compassion lives on through Lucy's Love Bus.
Today, thanks to Lucy’s dream, Lucy’s Love Bus provides free integrative therapies to nearly 500 children with cancer - and now their family members! - throughout New England annually! Whether its a traditional integrative therapy (e.g. massage, yoga, acupuncture, Reiki, chiropractic care, therapeutic horseback riding), or a complementary activity that enhances quality of life and promotes the joy that belongs in every childhood (e.g. gymnastics, dance, swimming, personal training, martial arts), we pay for safe services that will help children with cancer feel better!
